"All rich people are selfish and stingy"
This statement could not be farther from the truth. How can it be when there are people like Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey, who give millions of dollars away to charity. They take their own money, which they work hard to earn, and give it to the less fortunate. Bill Gates and his wife help to prevent the spread of disease in Africa. Oprah built her own school for underprivileged girls. How can these people be selfish and stingy?
I know what you're all thinking: But what about the super-spoiled rich people on shows like the Real Housewives and in books like the Clique? I totally agree that they are (or act anyway) completely spoiled and out of touch with the real world. They are selfish and nasty to people, even those who they consider friends. They are stingy about gifts - rating if they were expensive enough.
So I get it. The media likes to portray the rich as Stingy. Selfish. And Stupid. Don't get me wrong - some are; just like in any economic class. But to say that all rich people selfish and stingy is a huge generalization. And it is wrong for many people.

ReplyDeleteomg i totally agree-- i love oprah! those kind of people have a lot of money but have the heart to share with others. if i was that rich, i'm sure i would do so too. but in these hard, economic times, there are people who still waste their money on designer items and overpriced things. i think in these economic times, people should use their money wisely, but still some people lack the intelligence to do so.

I definitely agree with you. Not all rich people are "stingy". In fact, those rich people who actually earned their money tend to be less selfish and help others. Take the two people you used as an example. Both Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey were self-made people who knew how life was as regular people and have seen the bad side of life for others. On the other hand, look at the rich Hollywood celebrities like Paris Hilton who are really snobby. Anyway, it is true for some rich people that they are stingy, but for the majority of the other rich people, this statement is untrue. I definitely would give money to charity if I somehow became rich.

ReplyDeleteI agree. That statement is way too general. It is like how Malcolm X called all whites devils. There are some who are not nice but there are also some who are very nice. Overall, just as how Malcolm's statement seems exaggerated, I think this quote, "All rich people are selfish and stingy," is the same. Like your examples, there are rich who give out scholarships to others. On the other hand, there are others who help people live better lives. An example is Barack Obama. He is powerful and no one can disagree that he is rich, right? So, I agree with you because there are rich who support less fortunate people with either money or power or skills that they have.
I agree also alison. This was a really good post. There are people out there who help others so much just like Oprah. That was a good connection alison because so many people think that rich people are snobby and uptight but they can't be more wrong. A lot of rich people have worked so hard to earn their money and this is exactly why they aren't selfish and stingy. Also, I watch gossip girl and I feel that it portrays rich people or "upper east-siders" as rich and obnoxious. Society really puts this picture into our heads even though it is really wrong. This question couldn't be more wrong because the majority of rich people are trying to do good in the world!
ReplyDeleteHi allison! The media definitely portrays rich people as stingy snobs who only care about the latest designer trends. This is not always true. All rich people have money because somebody earned it, whether they are self-made or inherited money from hard-working parents. I personally want to be rich one day just so I could help so many people! I think Oprah is a great person for using her self-made money to help the less fortunate, and I wish everyone was more like her!!
